Czech Republic, Prague: Cubex Centre Prag new multi-purpose centre opens in June

The construction of the centre with a capacity of up to 1,200 people is coming to an end and the centre will welcome its first visitors on June 20th.

Situated in the area known to locals as ‘Prague Manhattan”, Cubex Centre Prague is being built in one of the modern buildings within this new business area just two subway stops from the historic center. The surrounding infrastructure provides sufficient capacity for refection, accommodation and parking space. The nearby shopping mall – Arkády – hosts a complex of shops and restaurants.

The Cubex Center Prague is designed to host a wide range of different MICE events including congresses, conferences, corporate presentations, concerts, exhibitions, balls, gala diners. As part of the project development, the selection of suitable top technology was a key priority to ensure competitiveness among competitors. This includes a 102 m² / 1.098 ft² projection screen in the main foyer or the centre’s Chameleon Concept allowing colour customization of the entire centre to the client’s specification. One of the centre’s highlights is the accessibility of the main hall and the foyer which allows car exhibitions. Extra-strong rigging points for extreme loads allow suspension of heavy objects including cars.

Cubex Centre Prague offers variable spaces and configurations for different types of events. The main hall - theatre capacity: 1,000 - is divisible into three parts. Connected smaller halls and lounges extend the total capacity to 1,200 persons. However, Cubex can host events for up to 1,700 participants by connecting the neighbouring City Conference Center, with its capacity of 500 persons.

The interior design concept refers to the Czech cubism. The entire space reflects elements of this world-unique style - from the walls, through uniquely conceived bars and registration counters, to details such as cubist elements in catering, custom made glasses, chafings and other decoration.

France, Angers: A new Convention Center opening in 2019!

Germany, Cologne: Meetings and Congresses as an Economic Factor

How significant is the meeting market for the economy of the city of Cologne? A study commissioned by the Cologne Convention Bureau (CCB) answers this question and provides the first-ever detailed breakdown of the economic effects of meetings and congresses on Cologne. The study’s innovative calculation method considers not only the expenditures of the participants but also those of the organizers and exhibitors. It also considers for the first time the investments that venues make in Cologne.

This analytic method was developed by Ralf Kunze as part of his dissertation at the Leuphana University of Lüneburg. Kunze has been studying Cologne as a meeting destination ever since the foundation of the CCB through his work at the European Institute for the Meeting Industry (EITW). He calculated the economic effects of meetings and congresses on Cologne by means of a regional input-output analysis that makes it possible to collect detailed key figures for the meeting market in Cologne in areas such as value added, income and employees. Kunze developed this method based on worldwide research into tourism and meetings and adapted it to fit the German market.

Key figures for the meeting market in Cologne

Approximately 35,000 meetings and congresses with two million participants are held every year in more than 170 event venues in Cologne. According to the calculations, the Cologne meeting market’s total turnover (from consumption) in Germany amounts to EUR 1.3 billion annually. About 45 per cent of this amount (EUR 720.1 million) remains in Cologne. Because the meeting market is traditionally a cross-sectoral industry, many of the expenditures flow into the hotel and restaurant sectors, event venues and areas such as transportation, the retail trade and cultural events.

Expenditures of participants, exhibitors and event organizers

The participants of meetings and congresses in Cologne spend EUR 557.3 million annually. The players in this category account for the largest segment of total expenditures. Specifically, 64.5 per cent of the participants are day trippers and 35.5 per cent are overnight guests. On average, congress participants spend EUR 289.70 in Cologne during their visit to the city. The second-largest segment of total expenditures is accounted for by exhibitors, who spend EUR 479.5 million annually to present exhibitions associated with congresses and meetings. The initiators of meetings account for the third-largest segment of total expenditures. They spend EUR 263.6 million in areas such as catering, space rental costs, technical equipment and personnel.

Conference hotels are popular meeting locations

The largest percentage of meetings (37 per cent) are held in conference hotels, followed by 33 per cent in event centres and 30 per cent in other event locations. The breakdown of the turnover corresponds to the participant figures: conference hotels generate the greatest amount of turnover, namely EUR 236 million (42 per cent), followed by EUR 169 million generated by event locations (30 per cent) and EUR 153 million by event centres (28 per cent).

Taken into account for the first time: expenditures for investments

For the first time in Germany, the study also considers companies’ investments in Cologne, thus making a comprehensive overview possible. Some venues are investing considerable amounts in measures such as construction and modernization to maintain or optimize their services. According to the study, the investments made by locations in Cologne amount to EUR 14.9 million annually.

Economic effects on Cologne

Cologne’s meeting market generates value added amounting to EUR 534.6 million annually, as well as creating 8,056 jobs all over Germany. Almost 50 per cent of these jobs (3,786) are created directly in Cologne, with 30 per cent of the total at event locations and in the hotel and restaurant industry and 38 per cent in the event services sector. The remaining jobs are divided among the categories of transportation, construction and the retail trade. In addition, EUR 88.3 million in taxes are paid in Germany because of Cologne’s meeting market.

Local expertise in business and science

Business-related events whose purpose is to promote the sharing of ideas and knowledge benefit from Cologne’s strong business and science communities. Additionally, meetings and congresses reflect a city’s areas of expertise and helps to shape Cologne’s image. The CCB focuses on marketing Cologne’s existing amenities, such as its event locations, hotels and infrastructure, with an emphasis on the expertise of Cologne’s science and business communities – coordinated with the strategy of the German Convention Bureau (GCB).

Iceland, Reykjavik: Meet in Reykjavík signs a partnership agreement with the Universities in the Icelandic capital

On 9 April, an agreement was signed between Meet in Reykjavík and the University of Iceland (HÍ), Reykjavík University (HR) and the Iceland University of the Arts (LHÍ). The object of the agreement is to increase the number of international academic meetings and conferences held by universities in Iceland.

Meet in Reykjavík will assist the staff of the universities and their collaborators in preparations, information collection and contract preparations for international meetings and conferences, involving the universities in some respect. In addition, Meet in Reykjavík will provide information and hold presentations on the meeting and conference facilities of the universities for international associations and organisers of meetings and conferences.

Þorsteinn Örn Guðmundsson, the Managing Director of Meet in Reykjavík says that the agreement is an important step in strengthening Reykjavík as an international conference destination. "We have had good relations with the universities in recent years and are interested in expanding on our collaboration and making greater efforts to seek suitable projects for the destination and the university community here in Iceland."

Dagur B Eggertsson, the Mayor of Reykjavík, says that a dynamic meeting and conference service supports the goals of the city to provide a diverse and vibrant trade sector. "We wish to develop the city as a higher education city and as a knowledge-based community. An environment where enterprises are given excellent opportunities to grow and prosper. One can say, therefore, that many objectives coalesce in the agreement that has now been signed."

Discussions following the signing of the agreement revealed that Iceland has been focusing on formulating policies on issues pertaining to equal rights, geothermal energy and the Arctic region. This, for example, has resulted in increased interest in holding meetings and conferences on these matters in Iceland. Iceland is fully able to play an important part in a range of other issues and the agreement is a step toward such a role. Academic conferences are a significant way to attract attention to the research work carried out by the universities, strengthen their reputation and form relationships with overseas academics. In addition, academic conferences play an important part in determining the order in which universities are placed in international comparison lists.

Korea: PyeongChang Winter Olympics a Springboard for Attracting International Conferences to Korea

While the enthusiasm of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics is still on fire, Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) – MICE Bureau is organizing a series of roadshows across America and Europe in March and April, to promote Korea as an ideal destination for international conferences and meetings.

Korea is the most sought country for conventions according to the latest UIA Global Meetings Statistics report where Korea ranked number one with 997 meetings hosted in 2016. Last year, Korea had difficulties attracting business events due to certain political issues with North Korea. However, the amicable efforts shown by North Korea and South Korea during the 2018 Winter Olympics have caught public attention. KTO leverages this historic moment of unity to showcase Korea as a safe country and to invite international associations and groups to host meetings in Korea.

The roadshow took place in Vienna, Brussels, New York, Washington DC, and ends in London on April 25. The delegation consists of officials from the Korea MICE Bureau, representatives of several regional convention bureaus including Seoul, Incheon, Busan, Gangwon, Daejeon, Jeju, Goyang, and selected venue, hotels, travel agencies and DMCs.

The Korea MICE Roadshows include destination presentations, B2B meetings, gala dinners, and offer opportunities to establish potential partnerships and create wider networks with over 200 MICE buyers invited to participate in this program.

Following the successful hosting of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, along with the reconciliation of North Korea and South Korea – this is probably the best time to familiarize the American and European market on Korea. Through these roadshows, we aim to educate MICE specialized agencies and buyers about Korea's outstanding capabilities to host international conferences, promote "Korea Unique Venue" and our convention support program, and further boost Korea's image as a top destination for international conferences" Korea Tourism Organization - MICE Bureau Executive Director Kapsoo Kim said.

Oman, Muscat: OMRAN’s received country’s first LEED Gold certification for Package 2 of Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre

The Oman Convention & Exhibition Centre (OCEC), part of OMRAN’s Madinat Al Irfan Development is the first tourism development in Oman to achieve a LEED Gold certification from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) for package 2 (Exhibition Centre, Car Park and Energy Centre). Developed by Oman Tourism Development Company (OMRAN), the centre was recently awarded this prestigious international accolade for sustainability, setting standards for the sustainable development that reflects the future of Oman’s growing tourism industry.

Envisioned and pioneered by OMRAN, the centre demonstrates environmental stewardship and leadership in sustainable design and now holds the highest LEED point score in in the Sultanate. This accomplishment is a testament to OMRAN’s dedication to sustainable development and leadership in the construction industry.

“There are new initiatives every year at IMEX in Frankfurt because we continually monitor the coming trends, research what our audiences want and then create ways – or find new partners - to fulfil them. This year buyers will both see and experience some truly awe-inspiring new products, people and spaces throughout the show – more than we’ve ever showcased before,” says Carina Bauer, CEO, IMEX Group.

Experimenting with experiential

The most remarkable sensation will be in the Dark Room where participants will taste the extra sensory experience of an educational session in pitch black total darkness. This ‘Learning Lab’ will feature at IMEX as a result of the new IMEX Group partnership with C2 International, the ground-breaking leader in innovative business conferences. The partnership represents a joint effort to drive innovation and creativity throughout the meetings and events sector.

A multimedia encased two-storey stack of meeting rooms

As well as the Dark Room, also in Hall 9 will be the G-Tainer, a multimedia encased two-storey stack of meeting rooms which will feature a new ground floor ‘Chat Bar’. This casual space has been designed for people to meet and make new contacts by holding ‘Curiosity Conversations’ with each other. In the new

IMEX Live Zone a number of experiential suppliers will bring a touch of magic to the show, demonstrating the power of how thinking and acting more creatively can engage attendees in a variety of ways.

They range from Mr Piano – a giant, walking piano ideal for team building events and the funky Fotobus to a puppeteer, a caricaturist, musicians and improvisational street theatre.

‘Floating high and catching the eye’ will be Uber Spheres and Thought Bubbles - striking new ways to catch attention and to brand overhead areas. These are supported by warm air jetted from below so they float totally free – and are completely wireless.

The new Zeus Coworking Campus will not only provide opportunities to check emails and to network but also to try out gadgets and games and to take part in pop-up events including Speed Networking.

Another change at IMEX is the show’s continued expansion into Hall 9 (exhibitors are in Hall 8). The IMEX Inspiration Hub, the centre and venue for most educational sessions during the three days of the show, moves to a new home in Hall 9. Relocating it here creates more space for workshops, campfires, research pods and hot topic tables - all the different formats and areas in which 180-plus sessions will be presented.

Moving into the main exhibition hall (Hall 8), most notable is the new Tech Café close to all the event technology providers. This is not just a café, it will also showcase event technology providers with a presentation area and space for three new participants. This area will enable exhibitors and IMEX to deliver stand presentations about technology, to show what’s new and help buyers appreciate what technology can do for them and how the tech landscape has moved on from last year.

Something for special interest groups

EduMonday, 14 May , continues to grow and provide further innovation and choice for IMEX attendees. New events include an Agency Directors Forum, a facilitated forum by invitation only for the directors and senior planners of agencies. Also new are She Means Business, created in partnership with tw tagungswirtschaft, which celebrates and debates the role of women in the meetings industry, and Rising Talent, an afternoon of actionable learning and career development for meeting professionals under-35.

Throughout the show, including the educational programme, there will be activities designed to highlight a new IMEX partnership with LiveCom Alliance, a European umbrella organisation for national live event associations.

Finally, as a way to bring this year’s IMEX Talking Point of ‘Legacy’ to life, attendees can visit a ‘Legacy Wall’ in Hall 9. Sustainably crafted from reused pallets, the wall will display exhibitors’ own legacy stories together with short stories about IMEX CSR and Sustainability projects, including a spotlight on future leaders.

Peru: Machu Picchu Ranked the Virtuoso Top Dream Destination 2018

Machu Picchu, Peru was crowned as "Top Dream Destination 2018" in the first Virtuoso Travel Dreams Tournament, in which 16 top destinations in the world were competing for the coveted title. Peru’s majestic Inca citadel was deemed by an international audience as one of, if not the most desired places to visit in the world.

Ukraine, Lviv: Global Meetings Industry Day celebrated for the 1st time

Lviv participated for the 1st time in Global Meetings Industry Day celebration. On April 12, Lviv Convention Bureau organized an event in Ukrainian retro style – “Business starts with a meeting” – for all the representatives of the field.

"Last year about 400 conferences took place in Lviv. And it is pleasant that our city is more and more frequently chosen for such activities. However, we noticed that many representatives of the business hospitality industry are still unfamiliar with each other. So, we decided to improve the situation, because the contacts play a key role in business, " Lina Ostapchuk, Lviv Convention Bureau director, says.

The main objective of the event was to bring together industry representatives and leaders of the city to demonstrate the real impact that conferences, conventions and trade shows have on people, business and communities.

The main part of the event was a panel discussion devoted to Lviv position on the European map of meetings industry. The speakers were Lviv Honorary Ambassadors Oleksandr Filts and Oleh Turii, the Executive Director of the Polish Society for Vascular Surgery Katarzyna Cioch and the Lviv city Mayor Andriy Sadovyy. They discussed the importance of maintaining good business relations, as well as the need for the continuous development of the city's conference infrastructure. The Mayor also emphasized that good contacts are more important than any other resources.

"There were no “random” people at our event. All of them are connected to conferences and to creating the image of the city, both in Ukraine and abroad. We are grateful to people who invest their time and efforts in the industry, " Lina Ostapchuk added.

During the event the audience also had a lot of opportunities for business networking – along with good vinyl music and covers to Ukrainian hits performed live. All the participants were dressed in the 1930-40s style. The event brought together around 150 representatives of the city's meetings industry.

USA, Hawaii: A Truly Global "East-Meets-West" Destination

Hawaii is like no other place on earth. Made up of a collection of six unique islands – Kaua’i, O’ahu, Molokai, Lāna’i, Maui and the island of Hawaii – each known for its own unique experiences and activities. While it is home to one of the world's most active volcanoes and the world's tallest sea mountain, it also houses the former seat of a royal kingdom and is home to the only royal palace on US soil. Hawaii is one of the youngest geological formations in the world and the youngest state of the union.
