Publishers Note

Dear Reader!

After Harvey and Irma, the first earthquake in Mexico and flooding in Bangladesh – I thought or better hoped – that we were done with catastrophes, but we were not. It’s literally breaking my heart to see the added devastation of another earthquake in Mexico City and the continuing human crisis that hurricane Maria caused in in Dominica, Guadeloupe, the British and US Virgin Islands Turks and Caicos, Puerto Rico and parts of Cuba during the past month. We are collecting as much information as possible and these will be made available on our website in the NEWS section. To support your research, we created an additional headline in the section – sad enough – and will add information by Country and State.

If you have information to help our industry with the planning, please share it with us – and if you are planning – please consider the options you have to bring business back into these regions – it is desperately needed revenue to help the local economies after cleaning up.

Our entire team at MICE Media Marketing is currently discussing which support options we will create for the industry partners who have taken devastating hits by the different disasters we recently had to see and our support and thoughts go out to those hit by storm, earthquake and devastation. Underneath the skin, we’re all the same and we believe staying together, even when separated by oceans and miles is possible.

Please don’t forget the upcoming hosted buyer events – World MICE Day in Qingdao, China, www.worldmiceday.com, MITM Americas & Cultourfair in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, www.mitmevents.com and MICE West Africa in Accra, Ghana – www.micewestafrica.com.

You are warmly invited to share this edition of NEWSFLASH.

German Convention Bureau – Future Meeting Space: What type of participant are you

Future Meeting Space launches online survey providing participants with instant personal analysis

The object of the »Future Meeting Space« (FMS) survey is to determine different types of participants and how they are affected by various elements of meetings.

The »Future Meeting Space« innovation alliance kicks off its second research phase with an online survey aimed at participants of meetings and conventions to determine how specific elements of meeting methodology and technology affect knowledge transfer, learning progress, networking and the experience value for different types of participants.

Personal analysis via immediate feedback function

Participants completing the questionnaire that was developed by the Fraunhofer-Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) will not only support the research project but also be sent their personal survey evaluation. This immediate feedback enables them to compare themselves with an ever-growing database of other respondents and to see how they differ from them. The survey takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete and will close on 28 February 2018. Apart from demographic data and individual patterns of behaviour, its questions cover a visited event, the methods and media that were used at the event as well as core success factors such as knowledge transfer and interaction.

Recommendations for the MICE sector

The findings of the survey will form the basis for providing the MICE sector with specific recommendations for actions. The »Future Meeting Space« innovation alliance was initiated by the German Convention Bureau (GCB) together with the Fraunhofer-Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) and the European Association of Event Centres (EVVC) in early 2015 to analyse how trends, innovations and developments in society impact the event sector.

Apart from the lead partners GCB and EVVC as well as the Fraunhofer-Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) as project manager, KFP Five Star Conference Service GmbH, Panasonic Marketing Europe GmbH, SENNHEISER electronic GmbH & Co. KG, SevenCenters of Germany, Tourismus NRW e.V. and VDE e. V. in cooperation with m:con are research partners for phase two of the project.

South Africa: Cape Town International Convention Centre’s New Expansion – CTICC 2

CTICC 2 Impresses With First Event

The Cape Town International Convention Centre’s new expansion – CTICC 2 – delighted organisers and delegates alike as it successfully hosted the 21st Annual Congress of the South African Council of Shopping Centres (SACSC). The conference, held from 13 to 15 September was the new venue’s first ever event and attracted 1 500 delegates from over 500 companies.

Commenting on the success of the event, SACSC posted an enthusiastic tweet on the second day of the conference: “We are honoured to be the first event in CTICC 2. The CTICC team has been nothing but incredible in the hosting of our 21st Annual Congress. Thank you.”

CTICC Chief Executive Officer, Julie-May Ellingson said that hosting the SACSC Annual Congress was a major triumph thanks to the excellent synergy and collaboration with the client: “It was a pleasure to work with CEO Amanda Stops and the SACSC team. They were incredibly supportive and very accommodating. We work closely with every client to understand their requirements and objectives but in a brand-new event space, this close partnership becomes even more critical.”

The congress took advantage of several of the state-of-the-art venues within CTICC 2. Exhibition Halls 8 & 9 were transformed into the main plenary room while Hall 10 played host to a much-anticipated lunch with Olympic athlete Wayde van Niekerk and his impressive coach, Anna “Tannie Ans” Botha. Halls 5, 6 & 7 housed the parallel exhibition area where suppliers, retailers, and mall tenants showcased innovations.

In addition, the centre’s range of meeting rooms and suites for other functions - a VIP reception room; a nerve centre for event managers and a media interview room were also used. And organisers and delegates experienced the centre’s capabilities in hosting events across the entire venue complex as the SACSC gala dinner took place in CTICC 1 (the original building).

“We were also delighted to see one of the main reasons for the expansion – the concurrent hosting of large-scale events – justified over the week. The CTICC hosted two major events across the complex at the same time. While the SACSC Annual Congress ran in CTICC 2, CTICC 1 hosted the 1st Global Evidence Summit with over 1 000 research scientists from across the globe,” explained Ellingson. At CTICC 2, delegates particularly enjoyed having coffee and relaxing at the centre’s new coffee shop – Coffee on the Circle. The delegates – real estate developers, property experts and retail marketers – many of whom have been involved in their own developments, were complimentary of the new venue, particularly, the centre’s world class facilities.

Ellingson believes the centre’s first series of events will showcase the CTICC’s ability to host different event types. “CTICC 2 will host its first consumer show – MamaMagic, The Baby Expo, in October. In November the international conference, and Africa’s largest technology-focused event, AfricaCom, will celebrate its 20th edition in CTICC 2. These two events promise to attract 13 500 and 1 600 visitors respectively and will be robust tests of the new centre’s capabilities.”

Ellingson confirms client experience will be used to fine-tune CTICC 2 event management procedures: “Client feedback forms an essential part of these first events to ensure we iron out any venue challenges.” The opening of CTICC 2 is set to enhance the convention centre’s contribution to economic growth and business tourism to the city and region. “The CTICC is a platform where global leaders and experts meet. The events we host further the sharing of knowledge, transfer of skills and intellectual advancement while opening our destination to trade and investment opportunities. CTICC 2 boosts Cape Town’s appeal and reputation as a global meetings destination and the centre’s ability to deliver socio-economic benefits to the region,” said Ellingson.

Switzerland, Lausanne: Europe’s largest freshwater aquarium AQUATIS to offer new event spaces

Lausanne’s MICE offering is to be further enhanced with the addition of the AQUATIS Aquarium-Vivarium set to open on the site of the BOAS owned Aquatis Hotel in the city next month.

The aquarium-vivarium will be unique in Switzerland and the largest freshwater aquarium in Europe. Once open, it will be available for corporate hire with a range of dedicated events spaces, with capacity for up to 300 for banqueting and 350 for receptions, providing a unique experience and setting. When both levels of the AQUATIS Aquarium-Vivarium are used, event capacity is doubled, while the outdoor terrace can accommodate up to 500 guests for receptions.

The unusual events space will complement the existing conference and meetings facilities at the three-star plus Aquatis Hotel, which has 143 rooms and can accommodate up to 300 delegates theatre-style in its existing events spaces.

Olivier Mathieu, Congress and Meetings Manager at Lausanne Tourism & Convention Bureau, comments: “The new AQUATIS Aquarium-Vivarium is a welcome addition to the meetings and events offering in Lausanne, enriching our already extensive range of spaces with a uniquely wonderful offering. The aquarium is a beautiful space that embodies what Switzerland is all about. It will no doubt be a key attraction for both corporate and association events, with particular appeal for those interested in nature and the environment.”

The AQUATIS Aquarium-Vivarium will house examples of 20 different ecosystems. Its two million litres of fresh water and 46 different aquariums, vivariums and terrariums will be home to 100 reptiles and 10,000 fish from five continents. More than merely a visitor attraction, Aquatis (Aqua for water, T for ‘terra’ or earth, I for innovation and S for science) is a scientific, technological, cultural and sustainable project. Supported by the Foundation AQUATIS, the project aims to increase awareness of nature and aquatic environments within the city of Lausanne and will drive educational initiatives through interactive activity programmes and workshops with specialist guest speakers.

Easily accessible via road and Lausanne’s metro, the AQUATIS Aquarium-Vivarium is co-located with the Aquatis Hotel which opened last year and has already proven popular with international conferences.

IMEX America 2017 - More than just a buzzword: gain an insight into innovation at PCMA Business School

Innovation: it’s more attainable than you think - This is the subject of a session Cleveland Justis, from the Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at UC Davis School of Management, will deliver at PCMA Business School taking place at IMEX America, October 10 – 12 in Las Vegas.

As a leading innovation expert, Cleveland will show meeting and event strategists how to incorporate innovation principles into their work during the high-level professional development day held on Smart Monday, a free program of education taking place on October 9, the day before IMEX America begins.

Cleveland explains: “Innovation is one of the many buzzwords used in this ever-changing industry, and it’s more important than ever because society and business are both changing so rapidly. Technology is changing everything about how we live our lives and millennials, as core adopters of technology, are changing expectations about work, society, and commerce. As a result, business leaders must be willing to continually adapt and change or risk being left behind.

A powerful day of business learning and networking at PCMA Business School

“I’m interested in exploring ways in which innovators can foster personal connections that give them access to new ways of thinking. Once people do this they realize that innovation is less about discovering a brand-new idea than it is about using existing ideas, processes, and products in new ways.”

PCMA's MBA-quality program is a free high-level professional development program led by inspiring business experts and academics from outside the meetings industry. The Business School enables meeting and event strategists to connect with their peers and sharpen their business skills, and forms part of the wider education program of over 250 sessions taking place on Smart Monday and throughout the show.

Registration is free and required in advance for PCMA Business School.
