Trendy topics being discussed in Berlin

Berlin is international, creative, and open-minded, and attracts talent from all over the world. The city is now considered a major centre for science and start-ups in Europe and is a sought-after location for digital conferences and events that deal with the global future. Berlin's MICE industry not only offers high-quality service, it is also closely linked to the city's technology and science scenes. These include world-renowned universities, more than 22 technology parks, and some 2,000 start-up companies. This environment makes the city an ideal venue for future-orientated events. Intelligent leaders from all over the world are coming to Berlin to get a handle on the issues facing the world's future.

Berlin is place to be for digital and future conferences

This year will see more than 50 events held in the German capital that focus on digitalisation: that's about one conference a week. Here's an overview of key digital transformation events being held in Berlin:

re:publica has been held in Berlin every year since 2007. In May of this year, more than 9,000 visitors gathered at Station Berlin for th re:publica conference with motto "Love out Loud!" The conference focuses on topics related to Web 2.0, including blogs and social media.

Also in May, the SingularityU Summit took place. Over two days, the conference considered the latest advances in technologies and biotech and asked whether the world might be saved by such exponential methods as robotics or artificial intelligence?

At the international T20 Summit: Global Solutions at the end of May, a month before the G20 summit, research institutes and think tanks from all over the world came to Berlin to offer their advice to the world's leaders. The conference which took place at the European School of Management and Technology in Berlin brought together high-calibre speakers and the world's leading think tanks addressing such G20 themes as financial resilience, climate policy, and the digital economy. The T20 (Think Tank 20) discussed how digitalisation is providing the increase in productivity necessary for continued growth.

The Social Media and Critical Care (SMACC) conference is an innovative, international conference with top-class presentations in TED-Talk style. More than 2,500 participants are expected to discuss hospital-related issues from emergency medicine to anaesthesia and intensive care (27– 29 June, Tempodrom, smacc.net.au).

Digital Life Design (DLD) is Europe's leading international digital and innovation conference (22– 24 October, 17, Bolle Event Location, dld-conference.com).

And, looking ahead to an event that will cap off the year: the digital conference TechCrunch Disrupt 2017 is moving this December from London to Berlin (4– 5 December, Arena Berlin, techcrunch.com).

Number of meetings and events in Berlin on the rise

A look at the most recent statistics for 2016 show that more than 11.5 million people came to Berlin last year to participate in one of approx. 137,500 events (both +2%). 16% of Berlin's events are held by the 'medicine, science and research' industry (up from 12% in 2015); 13% are in the "IT, electronics, communications" field. Berlin is thus as much the place to be for digital conferences as it is for conferences in medicine and science. These sectors account for one third of the city's meetings volume and they attract the largest gatherings to the German capital. All meetings and conventions can searched by topic and date on our conventions calendar at convention.visitBerlin.com.
